The ExoMars VR project is a detailed virtual reality model of the ExoMars Rover, developed during a VR internship at ATG Europe from February to September 2019. The VR model was showcased at the European Space Agency's ESTEC facility in Noordwijk.
I was responsible for developing the whole scene in Unreal Engine 4. For this, I created the landscape and recreated the model with various components in Unreal Engine 4, and did all the lighting. Notable details include the landscape itself, which is based on a real heightmap of a potential landing site, and the realistic puffs of dirt that simulate wind effects on Mars.
I developed custom textures and materials using Substance Painter. I am particularly proud of the solar panels, which reflect light in multiple directions, and the realistic dirt effects that simulate the conditions on Mars.
I optimized the model for real-time rendering by removing unnecessary details and baking them into normal maps where possible. Additionally, split the model into subcomponents that can be individually manipulated.
